Chapter 9:
Closer Than You Think

Helen sat on the porch staring out at the gardens. Winter was upon them though snow had not yet fallen. Throughout the autumn months, there had been no change in the growth of what she’d planted. Everything remained dead and barren. No matter how much time passed, there were no visible results to her efforts. She thought perhaps the seeds were in a dormant state, waiting until the frost of winter passed.

            In contrast to the lifeless flowerbeds, the old mansion was looking new again. The paint was no longer chipped and the unsightly boards in the windows had been removed. As to the interior, most of the floors and walls had been washed down thoroughly, the rugs vacuumed, and the shelves dusted...
