When the World Gets You Down

Updated: Dec 17, 2020

Do you ever have those days when everything seems to be against you? Nothing goes right, and no matter what you do to try to solve the problem, it spirals further out of control! You try to be positive and find the bright side, but you find yourself falling deeper and deeper into frustration. Every time you open your mouth, anger hisses from your fed up tongue. When you try to sleep, a whirling mind drives you insane. Every day you feel yourself on the verge of tears, but you have nowhere to release this building stress! Crying doesn't help. Shouting doesn't help. Punching a hole in the wall makes things worse. And you can't keep this bottled in.

You're a musician, but you can't find your song. You're an artist, but you can't find your vision. You're a writer, but you can't find your story. You're a dancer, but you can't find your rhythm. You're an athlete, but you can't find your pace.

When you can't see the end of the tunnel, what do you do?

Really. What do you do? You've been pushed to the limit of your patience and your rope is about to snap. But instead of a solution, life throws another curve ball at you for your already frazzled self to deal with. You can't take it anymore but you have no one to tell! It's not that your friends won't understand. You don't want to drag them into your problems, and let's be real, you don't quite know how to express yourself at this point anyway. You just feel...trapped. Stuck in an ever swirling sea of self-doubt and negativity.

How do you find hope in the vast bleakness of hopelessness?

When you find that there's nowhere to turn, there's only one thing you can do. Stop turning.

Take a moment. Just stop. Breathe.

Sing off key at the top of your lungs to your favorite playlist. Scribble on a canvas like a kindergartner. Write the worst page in the history of writing. Dance the messiest dance you've ever danced. Run.

It doesn't matter if it's awful. In fact, let it be awful. Pour out all your hurt and anger into the thing you love, the thing that makes you who you are. It isn't dead inside of you.

When there's nowhere else to turn, stop turning, and take a step forward. The direction doesn't matter. Hold your head high and continue. Make a plan. Set a goal for yourself. And, let's not forget what's really important here, believe! Believe in your song. Believe in your vision. Believe in your story. Believe in your rhythm. Believe in your pace.

Believe in YOU, because YOU will overcome!
